Professor Lei's main research directions in recent years focused on modern publishing transformation studies in China and contemporary media culture studies in China. Major courses taught include Media Culture Research, Media, Culture and Society, Chinese Social Culture, and Research since the 1990s, etc.

Professor Lei has more than 60 academic papers published, including more than 30 core Chinese journals (CSSCI). And many academic papers have been translated into English, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Spanish published in overseas academic journals. And Professor Lei Qili is the PI(principal investigator) of projects including the National Social Science Fund Project, Shanghai Social Science Project, the New Century Excellent Talent Project of the Ministry of Education, and a number of research projects commissioned by relevant Shanghai Municipal Commissions and Bureaus.
